This is how to shoot a gun.
STEP ONE: Check the revolver is loaded. Release the cylinder and rotate it to the side.
This is what a 6-year-old girl did amidst the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting in Connecticut, America. Only she wasn't holding a gun, she had her hand pressed on the body of her dead friend and rotated it to the side so she could lie down feigning dead, to escape being shot. The stakes in a game of pretend had never been so high. 20 dead. Most of them children.
STEP TWO: Carefully pick up your gun, keeping your finger outside the trigger, extended straight and flat on the side of the guard.
Straight and flat is how people were lying under the seats at the cinema during the Colorado premier of Batman. Popcorn and frozen cokes surrounded the massacre that James Holmes induced, 12 dead.
STEP THREE: Make sure the space you are going to shoot in is well lit and quiet to ensure you have full concentration.
2016, Orlando, Omar Mateen did not have a well lit and quiet space. Pulse was not well lit or quiet for it was a nightclub, not a shooting range.
STEP FOUR: Hold your weapon in the firing-ready position. Open your dominant hand (the hand you write with), taking the pistol in your other hand, insert the grip (handle) of the pistol into the web of your dominant hand. With your thumb on one side of the grip, keep your middle, ring, and pinky fingers curled securely around the trigger guard.
Yes please, go ahead, hold that weapon in the firing-ready position and look at the peoples lives you are about to destroy. As you open your dominant hand (the hand you write with), think about the person down the barrel of that gun, their dominant hand. Think about the first time they learnt to write, to spell their name, do you know their name? Think about the time they wrote their final high school essay, put a full stop at the end and handed it in with a smile on their face, think about the time they wrote poetry in the early hours of the morning. Think about a time they could think, because in a few seconds you're going to put a bullet through their head and they won't ever think again. As you place your thumb on one side of the grip, as you keep your middle, ring and pinky fingers curled securely around the other side of the trigger, think about what pulling that is going to do to these people. Think about the time they used their middle fingers, the time they stuck it up to their parents, their math teacher, the guy who cut them off in the traffic, their shitty ex-boyfriend. Think about their ring finger, the ring or potential ring that may one day sit on it, gleaming like an announcement to the world that they're in love. Think about their pinky, how many times as a child did they lock with another, promising. I guess swearing not to tell your best friends secret doesn't mean much in your last moments. If only someone could lock pinkies with the American government, promising to enforce gun laws.
