I was one of the first to admit that Frank Oceans album was probably a drill. However that being said I was also one of suckers who checked their phone every 5 minutes on Friday, and then Saturday and then finally admitted on Sunday what we all knew, Frank Ocean was not releasing his album.
At this point if Ocean actually did any releasing it would break the internet harder than a Kardashian fully clothed, Taylor Swift actually admitting she’d done something wrong or Cody Simpson making a return, (to be fair if I lost Gigi Hadid I’d drop off face of the earth too.) However Cody’s still around, just not smack bang in the middle of the news, while Ocean could beat out some of the top magicians with his vanishing act. No Instagram, no twitter, no music, no tours for three years. Prior to his bullshit claims of an album drop he didn’t remove himself from the grid, but rather became a grid, in which fans desperately searched for though for answers of his upcoming album.
Thing is fans weren’t just going through his trash holding on to scraps of things that might be signs of an album. Ocean repeatedly made reference to the upcoming album, telling a BBC Radio host in 2013, THREE years ago "I'm like 10, 11 songs into this next thing. It's another cohesive thing bordering on a concept album again."
Which actually might not mean much because I said pretty much the exact same thing to my creative writing professor about my novel, I talk a lot about being “10, 11 chapters in and a I’ve got a lot of cohesive concepts.” But maybe Frank and I have more in common than I thought, we’re both full of shit.
Maybe the reason we’re all so eager for it to come out is because it isn’t. In a world where you can find everything in the click of a button maybe the reason we’re so intrigued is because this is something we were promised, but didn’t get. Hollywood is a polished, well-executed version of real life after all, and how many times have we been told our ‘food is coming’, ‘car will be fixed in a few weeks’ or that public transport is running ‘a little behind schedule’.
Or maybe Frank is trying to do what others failed too, fading to black while still on top. Maybe nothing will ever live up to the expectations of Channel Orange, maybe he never started writing the album, maybe he never will.
